English Learning Groups

Mercer County Library System offers a variety of English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for adult learners to improve and practice their English language skills.  With a group leader, adult learners are given the opportunity to improve their English conversation skills with other language learners in a supportive environment. Virtual and in-person groups are available. To register to attend, please follow instructions as outlined below for each option.

Hickory Corner Branch

ESL Conversation

Monday Afternoons at 2:30 PM

Improve your English speaking skills by chatting in casual conversation. The sessions are intended for intermediate-level speakers (those comfortable speaking English in most situations and looking for practice to increase confidence).

Learning English

Every Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 8:15 PM

This is an entry-level ESL is taught by experienced staff member Victor Fernandez.

Hopewell Branch

ESL Conversation

Tuesdays, 2:00 PM

Come to the Hopewell Branch for relaxed conversation in English. This program is ideal for speakers with Intermediate proficiency in English, though all are welcome. Join TESOL-certified librarian Chip McAuley to practice spoken English in a supportive, friendly environment.

Lawrence Headquarters Branch

ESL Conversation Circle

Second Wednesday from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

This is a fun and non-judgmental conversation circle for anyone who wants to practice their English language skills. We will talk about our lives, our interests and anything else we feel like saying in this safe and relaxed group. No materials are required. Librarian Andrew Punk will facilitate this non-structured class.

ESL Conversation Group for Adults

Tuesdays at 10:00 AM

If you already know some English and want to improve your speaking and comprehension skills, please join librarian Elka Frankel for some practice sharing your thoughts and ideas about all kinds of things with others in the group. We’ll also cover vocabulary, idioms and grammar relevant to our discussions. Bring your questions too!

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Citizenship Exam Practice

Are you working toward U.S. Citizenship? Make an appointment for a practice interview session with an MCLS staff member to go through all three sections of the test: reading, writing and the civics questions. This practice session will give you a good idea of what will happen during the interview and how well prepared you are. These appointments will take place via GoToMeeting until further notice. 

Citizenship Exam Preparation

Every Wednesday 4:00pm-5:00pm at Hightstown Branch

If you are interested in becoming a US citizen, we can help! Join our free preparation class to study & practice for your citizenship exam.

Registration is required before the event by calling the Hightstown Branch at 609-448-1474. If you register and realize you cannot make it, please contact us so someone else can have your spot.
