About the Branch

Far from its humble beginnings as a one room library behind the Lawrence Shopping Center, the Lawrence Headquarters Branch now stands at the helm of the Mercer County Library System, housing a variety of print, electronic and audiovisual materials, in addition to the Lawrence Historical Collection and the Library Administrative Offices. Numerous book displays, bookmarks, newsletters and other handouts serve to inform and to complement our seasonal decorations, creating an atmosphere of warmth and welcome amidst a very busy building!

During our most recent building expansion, which was completed in 1997, the branch gained an additional 7,000 square feet of library space and now boasts conference rooms for community and non-profit use, Internet, word processing, Publisher, Excel and PowerPoint access from every public terminal, extensive print and electronic business reference sources, including a room dedicated to New Jersey materials that also houses key genealogical research resources and a sixteen PC Computer Instruction lab.

In addition to these changes, we have made many recent additions that we hope you use as well:

  • a sensory walkway in the Youth Services area
  • “charging furniture” – blue chairs with power outlets and a table with an outlet in the YA area
  • vending machines in the lobby

The branch offers a full monthly schedule of computer instruction classes, from an introductory mouse class to PowerPoint and intermediate Excel training, as well as monthly adult programming, book discussions and children’s activities, all of which are listed in our monthly “Calendar of Events” and “Computer Instruction Brochure” and are free of charge.

Study/Call Rooms

The Lawrence Headquarters Branch is accepting reservations for their new study/call rooms! These rooms are for individual or small group study, interviews, small group meetings, or video/phone call only; and are available for use by library patrons aged 14 and older. Study rooms are not to be used as one’s place of business or for the solicitation of paid services.

Reservations can be made for three days ahead of time. Rooms may be reserved for up to two hours per day, 30 minutes minimum.

Library staff retains the right to monitor all usage to ensure compliance with library policies, including the Standards of Patron Conduct.

Call the Lawrence Reference Desk at 609-883-8292 to make a reservation or for additional information.

The New Jersey Room

The New Jersey Room at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch contains a collection of historical and genealogical materials on New Jersey with distinct emphasis placed on materials covering Mercer County and its municipalities.

These historical and genealogical materials include atlases, archives, directories, encyclopedias, legal resources, records, and more. Special vertical files on a variety of topics covering New Jersey are also kept in this collection.

In addition to housing the New Jersey collection, the New Jersey Room serves as a quiet study community room. Patrons are welcome to use the New Jersey Room at their convenience during open hours at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch.
