This position is 19 hours per week and includes two Saturdays per month and one evening per week (currently Tuesday evenings).
The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, in order to provide outstanding service to a diverse public. Candidates should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, willing to be part of a team environment, and able to follow policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks in accordance with library standards. A strong sense of friendly professionalism is required. The ideal candidate will also be flexible in their availability, efficient, and creative--capable of contributing new ideas that will help the branch to better serve its community.
Computer proficiency (including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher) is required, and a working knowledge of Symphony library software is preferred.
Fluency in Spanish is considered a great advantage.
Duties consist of, but are not limited to: general circulation desk duties; processing daily reports (e.g., patron hold request lists); emptying the book drop; assisting patrons with directional questions; performing title and subject searches; placing items on reserve; processing materials for the collection; assisting patrons using the copier and other library machinery; filing, shelving, shelf reading, assisting the children's department with craft projects and programs, and other projects and assignments as needed.

Please be advised the Mercer County Library System is seeking a part time, from 19 up to a maximum of 25 hour per week Building Service Worker.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to deliver library materials and supplies to the nine branches of the library system, Mercer County Community College and occasionally the McDade County Building. This position requires a candidate to lift items up to 50 pounds daily, wheel heavy objects, and move quickly in and out of a vehicle.
The position also supports the custodial needs and outside maintenance of nine branches within the Library System. Under direction of a supervisory official, the candidate will perform varied simple and moderately physically strenuous tasks involved in cleaning and maintaining public library buildings, furniture, buildings, and grounds; may assist in making minor repairs to buildings or equipment; does other related duties as required.
Although this title does accrue sick and vacation leave time, no health benefits are associated with it. This title is affiliated with AFSCME Local 2287.
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
The current starting salary for this position $17.7692 per hour. Mercer County residency is required.

This position supports the branch’s reference department and staff by providing adult services to, and meeting the vast information needs of, a diverse community.

Hours of work include Monday morning from 9 am -1 pm; every other Tuesday morning from 9 am -1 pm; Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5-9 pm (every other Wednesday from 1-9 pm); and every other Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm. Please note that the Ewing Branch is open on Sundays and four County designated holidays and the candidate must be available to work on some. Both an MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited institution and a NJ Librarian’s Certification are required. This position is covered under the AFSCME local 3566 and is a 19-hours per week position. The 2019 salary range is $20.33 to $37.51. This position does accrue vacation and sick leave, but does not include health benefits.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Searching the library catalog and locating library materials
- Accessing databases and other reference materials and showing patrons how to do so
- Assisting patrons of all ages with information needs in person, electronically, and by telephone
- Using computer, scanner, copier, and projector
- Teaching computer classes
- Planning/assisting with adult programming
- Creating marketing materials (such as adult program calendars and flyers)
- Participating in outreach activities
- Participating in collection development (weeding, selecting library materials, etc.)
- Providing readers’ advisory services
- Assisting patrons in the operation of computer equipment and software and providing appropriate instruction when needed

The Mercer County Library System is seeking to fill a full-time, 35 hour per week position in the Youth Services Department at the West Windsor branch. This is an excellent opportunity for a librarian, or student enrolled in a library program, with a strong vision to provide exciting services and programming to children and teens in this busy, thriving youth services department. This position includes at least one evening per week and Saturdays in rotation. The West Windsor Branch is open Sundays through the school year and four County-observed holidays. The candidate should be available to work some of those days, and have flexibility for scheduling programming at days and times that children and young adults will find convenient. The candidate should expect to participate in outreach to the schools and in the community.
We are seeking an energetic librarian with a passion for children’s services and a strong commitment to providing excellent public service. The candidate will have primary responsibility for providing reference and readers’ advisory services to teens and parents in a diverse community, developing the children’s and teen collections, creating innovative programming, outreach to schools and the community, and the Summer and Winter Reading programs. This position’s primary focus will be as a teen librarian; however, we are a small department, so the successful candidate will need to work well with all ages.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, writing library blog articles, preparing statistical reports on departmental activities and use, maintaining the collection budget for YS/YA materials, staying current on new developments in the library field (particularly with regard to children’s and teen services), providing reference assistance to patrons of all ages.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and forward thinking. Strong knowledge of literacy, child development, and literature for children and teens are vital in this role. S/he will be comfortable planning programs that encourage children to read, and sharing literacy tips with parents. Knowledge of current library technologies and demonstrated experience using technology (including library automated systems, online reference resources, and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel) are necessary.
Willingness to be part of a team environment and collaborate with the adult services and circulation departments are a must, as are strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
This position requires an MLS from an ALA accredited institution, although applications from students enrolled in an MLS program who are at least half-way through the program will also be considered for a library associate title, and are encouraged to apply. A New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate is required for those with an MLS degree.
This title is affiliated with AFSCME 3566. The current salary range for Librarian 1 is $37,009 – $68,271 in 8 steps. The salary range for Library Associate is $34,398 - $44,801 in 8 steps.
